Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is a colorless transparent to light yellow liquid with a pungent odor. Its color darkens when exposed to light. It is insoluble in water and reacts easily with compounds containing active hydrogen atoms, releasing a significant amount of heat.
The reaction with water to produce carbon dioxide is one of the key chemical processes in the manufacture of polyurethane foam. Contact with water must be strictly avoided. When heated to 45°C or in the presence of a catalyst, it reacts with strong oxidants. It is flammable and can catch fire in case of heat, open flame, or sparks. Decomposition by heat releases cyanide and nitrogen oxides.
